{"id":954,"date":"2015-10-12T00:23:33","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T00:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=954"},"modified":"2015-10-12T00:23:57","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T00:23:57","slug":"focus-on-the-backroads-the-state-fair-of-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=954","title":{"rendered":"FOCUS ON THE BACKROADS:  THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1444609315\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1444609315 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1444609315.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>On January 30,1886, a group of Dallas business leaders chartered a private corporation; The Dallas State Fair and Exposition, which was to become <strong>THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS<\/strong>. \u00a0Immediately there were was a disagreement over where to locate the site &#8211; resulting in a split into two separate groups; on the Dallas State Fair and the other The Texas State Fair and Exposition. \u00a0They opened within a day of each other both with exhibit facilities and a racetrack. \u00a0Both events attracted large crowds that exceeded 100,000 but revenues for the fairs did not meet expenses; the two groups merged in 1887 becoming the Texas State Fair and Dallas Expostition.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands would visit the fair every year to see the exhibits and women competed for prizes in baking, preserving, and needlework. \u00a0There were also appearances by such notables as John Philip Sousa, William Jennings Bryan, and Booker T.
