{"id":895,"date":"2015-08-02T11:56:31","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T11:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=895"},"modified":"2015-08-02T11:56:31","modified_gmt":"2015-08-02T11:56:31","slug":"focus-on-the-backroads-scottsville-cemetery-scottsville-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=895","title":{"rendered":"FOCUS ON THE BACKROADS:  SCOTTSVILLE CEMETERY &#8211; SCOTTSVILLE, TEXAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1438516158\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1438516158 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1438516158.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>In June of 1840 William Thomas Scott, his wife Mary Rose, and other members of their family settled in this area of East Texas. \u00a0Scott established five cotton plantations, including his residence, Scottsville Plantation, which was constructed by slaves. \u00a0His home was a replica of \u00a0a mansion in Mississippi owned by Jefferson Davis. \u00a0Scottsville was granted a post office in 1869 and the population grew to about 300. \u00a0Scott served in the House of Representatives of the last Congress of the Republic of Texas and later he became a Senator of the first legislature after statehood. \u00a0He died in 1887 and is bury next to Mary Rose in the <strong>Scottsville Cemetery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Scottsville\/Youree Cemetery<\/strong> is named for Peter Youree, a captain in the Confederate Army. \u00a0Youree later became a banker and eventually built the first skyscraper in Shreveport, Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Scottsville Cemetery<\/strong> is the oldest private cemetery in Texas located four miles east of Marshall, Texas. \u00a0The cemetery is filled with amazing artistic monuments. \u00a0At the entrance \u00a0of the cemetery is a Confederate monument. \u00a0During the Civil War the Scott Plantation provided provisions for the Confederate troops. \u00a0There are seven names, of family members who were involved in the war, inscribed on the pedestal.<\/p>\n<p>In 1904 a church was build at the cemetery by the family of William Scott Youree after he was killed in Mexico. \u00a0The Weeping Angel marks his grave. \u00a0The monument was created by sculptor Frank Teich and is named Grief. \u00a0The ten foot statue is carved from Carrera marble and cost $40,000.00 in 1904.<\/p>\n<p>If you look closely you will find a small stone, actually the smallest in the cemetery. \u00a0It is the stone for Major Herman Kretz &#8211; 2nd Battalion. \u00a0Pennsylvania infantry US Army. \u00a0In fine print it states: \u00a0Barried Lot 3593 Arlington National Cemetery. \u00a0The only reason the the stone is there is because it is next to his wife&#8217;s tombstone.<\/p>\n<p>A visit to the <strong>Scottsville Cemetery<\/strong> amazing!
