{"id":1719,"date":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1719"},"modified":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","modified_gmt":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","slug":"focus-on-the-backroads-nativity-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-catholic-church-high-hill-texas-schulenburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1719","title":{"rendered":"FOCUS ON THE BACKROADS:  Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church  High Hill, Texas (Schulenburg)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1520017862\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1520017862 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1520017862.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nIn the early 1860&#8217;s during the European immigration several families of Austrian and German descent \u00a0settled in High Hill. \u00a0They were searching for religious freedom and opportunities in the new world &#8211; they were some of the lucky ones that settled in THE LONE STAR STATE! \u00a0Life was not easy for these early Texans.. they had travel to nearby cities to celebrate mass and important church holidays. \u00a0In I869 construction for \u00a0the first church using \u00a0lumber that was hauled there from Columbus, Texas by ox-wagons. \u00a0 \u00a0On September 8, 1870 the first Catholic church of High Hill was blessed. \u00a0As the community grew the second church of High Hill was completed in 1875. \u00a0The first church building was converted to a school that stayed open until 1922.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>St Mary Church<\/strong> of today is the third church to be built on the original nine acres that was deeded to the church in 1868. \u00a0The current <strong>Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church<\/strong> is one of the first churches built by noted Texas architect, Leo M.J. Dielmann. \u00a0It was build in 1906.
