{"id":1719,"date":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","date_gmt":"2018-03-02T19:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1719"},"modified":"2026-07-09T20:34:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T20:34:54","slug":"focus-on-the-backroads-nativity-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-catholic-church-high-hill-texas-schulenburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1719","title":{"rendered":"FOCUS ON THE BACKROADS:  Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church  High Hill, Texas (Schulenburg)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1520017862\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1520017862 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1520017862.jpg\"><br> In the early 1860&#8217;s during the European immigration several families of Austrian and German descent \u00a0settled in High Hill. \u00a0They were searching for religious freedom and opportunities in the new world &#8211; they were some of the lucky ones that settled in THE LONE STAR STATE! \u00a0Life was not easy for these early Texans.. they had travel to nearby cities to celebrate mass and important church holidays. \u00a0In I869 construction for \u00a0the first church using \u00a0lumber that was hauled there from Columbus, Texas by ox-wagons. \u00a0 \u00a0On September 8, 1870 the first Catholic church of High Hill was blessed. \u00a0As the community grew the second church of High Hill was completed in 1875. \u00a0The first church building was converted to a school that stayed open until 1922.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2399\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5026361582214374;width:423px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-2048x1363.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/022218-PAINT-CHURCH-ST-MARYS-1-421x280.jpg 421w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <strong>St Mary Church<\/strong> of today is the third church to be built on the original nine acres that was deeded to the church in 1868. &nbsp;The current <strong>Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church<\/strong> is one of the first churches built by noted Texas architect, Leo M.J. Dielmann. &nbsp;It was build in 1906. Dielmann had just completed his architecture studies in Germany and designed a classic gothic revival structure. &nbsp;Many of the materials used were from the old church. &nbsp;The original 18 stainless windows from the second church were placed into the present church. &nbsp;On September 8, 1906 , the new brick church of High Hill was blessed and the cornerstone was put in place. &nbsp;The final decoration, artwork and wall and ceiling &nbsp;decorations were note completed until 1912. &nbsp;Three bells from the second church were place in the bell tower and remain operational today. &nbsp;North of the present church is a amazing marble cross surrounded by cedar trees. &nbsp;The cross placed there in 1891.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church<\/strong> is know as the <strong>&#8220;Queen of the Painted Churches&#8221;<\/strong> and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. &nbsp; This Church is just another of the wonderful destinations to visit in Texas. &nbsp;There are a number of the other famous Painted Churches in the neighboring town &#8211; making this a great weekend or day adventure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High Hill, Texas is located on Farm Road 2672, three miles from Schulenburg, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Life is just a schoolroom with a glorious opportunity to prepare us for
