{"id":1444,"date":"2016-08-21T23:10:02","date_gmt":"2016-08-21T23:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1444"},"modified":"2016-08-21T23:55:39","modified_gmt":"2016-08-21T23:55:39","slug":"focus-on-the-backroads-port-isabel-cemetery-port-isabel-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/?p=1444","title":{"rendered":"FOCUS ON THE BACKROADS:  PORT ISABEL CEMETERY &#8211; PORT ISABEL TEXAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1471820824\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1471820824 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1471820824.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nHidden on the backroads of Texas are thousands of historic cemeteries that contain important \u00a0bits of history of the people who settled the Lone Star State. \u00a0A wonderful example of this is the <strong>Port Isabel Cemetery<\/strong> in Port Isabel, Texas. \u00a0Every summer tens of thousands people travel on Hwy 100 through Port Isabel on there way to South Padre Island &#8211; by passing this remarkable cemetery that is one block off the highway (not exactly a backroad).<\/p>\n<p>The one acre of land is located on property that the government of Mexico granted to Don Rafael Garcia in 1829. \u00a0Garcia established a ranch named, El Fronton de Santa Isabel (Saint Elizabeth&#8217;s Bluff). \u00a0The ranch was operated by ranch hands and Garcia continued to live in Matamoros, Mexico.
