MARTIN WARRENTON, TEXAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"pp-lightbox-1458509607\" class=\"pp-lightbox-placeholder pp-gallery-placeholder lightbox-1458509607 mceItem\" style=\"display: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/p4\/placeholders\/lightbox-placeholder-1458509607.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By 1886 a large number of Catholic families were living in and around Warrenton, Texas. \u00a0 \u00a0The priest from near by Fayetteville organized a congregation and visited saying mass in private homes. \u00a0In 1888, \u00a0Frederick and Helen Spies sold one acre of land to the Catholic bishop on which a church and cemetery were to be built. \u00a0Within a year a large building was built and named Saint Martin. \u00a0The church flourished. \u00a0By 1915 most of the Catholics in the area had moved away. \u00a0There was the need to build a school in Fayetteville and the Catholic Bishop granted permission to demolish <strong>St. Martin Church<\/strong> so that the lumber could be used to build the school.<\/p>\n<p>When the school was completed there was enough lumber left over to build a small chapel at the original site of <strong>St.Martin&#8217;s Church<\/strong>. \u00a0The building is 14 foot 3 inches by 18 foot 1 inch and is now know as <strong>THE SMALLEST CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE WORLD<\/strong>. \u00a0It contains many of the fixtures, including the alter and tabernacle and statures, from the original church. \u00a0There are 12 wooden pews. \u00a0Mass is held once a year on All Souls Day.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the early settlers and church members are buried in the nearby cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>St. Martin Church is located off Highway 237 in Warrenton. \u00a0It is open to visitors and is worth the stopping for!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This little church is like the Little Train that Could&#8230;&#8230;.<em>I think I can. \u00a0I think I can. \u00a0I think I can. \u00a0<strong>I know I can<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By 1886 a large number of Catholic families were living in and around Warrenton, Texas. \u00a0 \u00a0The priest from near by Fayetteville organized a congregation &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,18,16,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1328","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-backroads","category-historic-cemetery","category-texas-historical-site","category-texas-towns"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1328","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1328"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1328\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1334,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1328\/revisions\/1334"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1328"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1328"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/focusonthebackroads.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1328"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
